What Assessment Should be Assessment is such a dirty word in education these days. State tests have overrun what educators are truly trying to do, and it has in effect made the word "assessment" one of fear and loathing. It should not be that way! Assessments should be ways to measure student learning and a way to help students fill the gaps.
When you assess, it should be the data you get from the assessment that matters not the actual score on it. A teacher then takes that data, and they craft a blended experience around what students need based on that data. Think about what would happen if we make test and assessments more about helping students then about harming them with a potential negative score. It will move us to a culture of risk. Students won't be afraid to take chances. State test won't be something to fear, and more than likely........TEST SCORES WILL RISE! |
